PORTRAITS BY JOHAN BERGMARK
FAMILAR FACES ART COLLECTION
Familiar Faces is a ongoing project by Swedish Photographer Johan Bergmark. He has a unique ability to solve the most strange photo situations by being friends with chaos and being enormously creative right there right then. He lays a person on the ground, under the cushions or asks them to step behind a curtain just to make the people lose their composure, relax and let themselves be photographed in a completely new way. No one creates images in the same way as Mr Bergmark and its portraits are special in several ways.

Johan is a big fan of Terry Gilliam and his own crazy universe. He wanted to have a peak into Terry’s own world. That’s why he’s opening the eye as much as possible, at the same time as nothing happens on the other side of his face. To Terry this is the normal state.

Mel Brooks was in Stockholm to talk about his film The Producers and a bunch of photographers should share the shoot that lasted for 20 minutes. Johan suggested three minutes per photgrapher, but no one else wanted it that way. Everybody wanted to record at the same time (which always gets bad). So Johan simply took 3 minutes first and then the others could have a go. Johan asked Mel to be serious and he got so happy about this that Johan got a hug from him.

WeiWei was in Stockholm to hand out a prize and Johan managed to get a few minutes. Very hard to shoot since he himself photographed Johan more than Johan photgraphed him. Johan found a magnifying glass and took the opportunity to check him out properly.

Shot during the filming of Men Who Hate Women. The film company wanted to stock up with pictures of Noomi and Micke to be used exclusively at the launch. Johan, Noomi and Micke hung out for a few hours at Debaser, Slussen's rock club, and took quite a few different pictures. The hat was Noomi’s private hat that she brought to the shoot.

Quentin hang out in Stockholm for a whole week when he was here to compete at the Stockholm Film Festival with Pulp Fiction. Johan and Quentin hang out in the bar at Lydmar Hotel every night and talked about music. He promised Johan his own photoshoot. "Tomorrow Johan, tomorrow…" he says every night… but suddenly he has gone home... Luckily Johan had taken some photos the first day already. As Johan puts it - He still owes me half an hour.

Charlotte photographed in the Gold Room at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm. A horrible room, with mirrors, gold and old furniture. It glitters and is generally messy. Johan choose to photograph Charlotte with a wintry Stockholm as a background and thanks to a mirror shard he managed to get rid of everything that is in the room itself.

Magnus photographed for the magazine Vi at his country house on Långholmen in Stockholm. Johan was mainly there to say hello when he did the interview. The idea was that he would take the photos another day. But when Magnus greeted the team in a hoodie, Johan had to take a couple of quick shots. Magnus "formal suit" Härenstam in a hoodie.

Steve gives interview after interview in a hotel room at Rival Hotel in Stockholm. When it's Johan’s turn, he sees that it says "REBEL" on the carpet outside Steves room. Johsn checked with Steves manager if it's ok to take Steve out and see how much of a rebel he is? To simply measure him. "Forget it boy!" is the answer, but Johan still choose to double check with Steve who was in.

This was during a break during the filming of "Men who hate women" and Johan shot press photos of Micke where he shoul be himself. Not the character, but Micke. He was late and a little hungover for the shoot, which made it possible for Johan to let him smoke a whole cigar for the sake of the picture. If you arrive late for a shoot, you take one for the team.

Wes & Jason was in Stockholm with the movie Darjeeling Express and Johan got an appointment with them. Wes has an ability to never change expression no matter what happens, so Johan tried to get Jason to disturb Wes so that something would happen. Nothing happened. Stockholm Film Festival's poster and catalog were adorned with a picture from the film made by Sean Gulettte. It was a woman with tears running from one eye. Johan knew right away that was how he wanted to shoot him. They worked for quite some time in contemplative silence without a camera… and suddenly they finally came. The tears.

Johan had met Ruth before in Paris and had taken a bunch of pictures for two Swedish magazines. When Johan now met her again, he arranged a print from that occasion to give her. When he saw that the print was exactly the same size as her real face, he got an idea and tore holes in it. She stands behind herself and Stockholms-Ruth looks out through Paris-Ruth.

Michael was in Stockholm for a seminar at the Swedish Film Institute on music in film. Johan had been promised time for photography, but it never came to pass. Nyman thought Johan could photograph him when he went to the taxi outside (about 20 meters walk). Arriving at the taxi, Johan asked for the opportunity to take one focused portrait. He sighed and took off his glasses for this, but Johan aimed the camera at his shadow instead.

Malik was an incredibly kind, warm and nice person. He only got upset when he talked about the Film Institute and their lack of support for his film. There was a different sound from the Institue when the film actually won an Oscar for best documentary.
Success and happiness do not always go hand in hand. This was the last picture Johan took of Malik. It is taken through Malik’s corrected balcony window. The hand is Johan’s. He had to make a shadow to be able to see anything at all and set the focus. For Johan, looking at the picture, it feels like Malik is saying hello "I have peace here, on the other side, take care of you wherever you are."

The film at the moment was called "Rusty Cage" by Audiard. Johan got very short time in his hotel room and the first thing Johan saw was the patch on Jaque’s thumb. It must be included. Johan is never nervous before a photo shoot. But he has been. And most of all when photographing Ernst Hugo Järegård, known for being moody. Johan had not slept at all the night before and once he unpacked the camera he realized that he forgot to bring the right film… He only had small screen film and a medium format camera. In a MacGyver-like way he managed to get the roll in the camera. Therefore, the holes and the text are visible in the image. The downside was that he could not rewind the movie. He only had 17 snaps.

Anton was in Stockholm to promote the film "Control". He held a press conference, but Johan skipped it and booked his own time with Anton the next day. When the press conference was over, Anton’s assistant called Johan and canceled the photo shoot, referring to the fact that Swedish photographers are boring and lacking in ideas. Johan had an exhibition at the hotel where Anton stayed and asked the assistant to check out the pictures and get back. If he thought Johan’s pictures were boring, they would cancel. Johan got an appointment. At 2 pm in November in Stockholm. Pitch black.Johan had decided to shoot with film and without artificial light… Johan managed to get a caretaker to open an elevator shaft so they could get out on the roof. There would be daylight, he hoped. When Johan turned around and saw this two meter long Dutchman appear in the hole, he saw the picture and asked him to stay there.

Johan had managed to get 10 minutes with Willem Dafoe in a hotel room when Willem was in Stockholm in 2012 to receive a film award from the Stockholm Film Festival.
Johan immediately took this portrait by the window, then explained to him that since he has such a familiar face, it would be fun to photograph him when he is not visible. Dafoe thought this was a fun idea and suddenly Dafoe was all over the room.
