FAMILAR FACES 2
THE FAMILIAR FACES ART COLLECTION
Uma was here to receive an award at Stockholm Film Festival. The shoot was postponed and cancelled three times before Johan finally had the opportunity to photograph her.
Johan had access to an empty hotel room where he rigged different stations to do the shooting as fast and efficient as possible. Suddenly there’s a makeup artist, hairstylist, an agent, a child, a nanny and a completely confused man falling into the room… and last Uma Thurman. Johan explained to her that he wanted to do the photoshoot around the room. She looked uninterested at Johan and said ”You get ONE picture”. She was not interested in this whatsoever. One picture! It had to be good… so I ripped apart the Film Festival catalogue and put in front of her on a table. She was already on the cover of that one, with a different picture. So she got to hold one of her own ripped out eyes in front of her own. Then Johan forced her to do another picture where she looked out through the window. She got curious how he would manage to take the photo from the outside on the third floor without a balcony… so then he got to take that one too.

Magnus photographed for the magazine Vi at his country house on Långholmen in Stockholm. Johan was mainly there to say hello when he did the interview. The idea was that he would take the photos another day. But when Magnus greeted the team in a hoodie, Johan had to take a couple of quick shots. Magnus "formal suit" Härenstam in a hoodie.

“I never let myself be photographed without my sunglasses. They are my hallmark, ”Peter Fonda told Johan. "Ok, what a shame" Johan said and unpacked the camera and left… It took a while, but then Peter called im back and he took this picture.

Johan wanted a grey British working class feeling… .a bit dirty. Like Mike’s movies. Difficult in central Stockholm but Johan dragged him out of the restaurant, through a nice green park, into this cross street.

Michael was in Stockholm for a seminar at the Swedish Film Institute on music in film. Johan had been promised time for photography, but it never came to pass. Nyman thought Johan could photograph him when he went to the taxi outside (about 20 meters walk). Arriving at the taxi, Johan asked for the opportunity to take one focused portrait. He sighed and took off his glasses for this, but Johan aimed the camera at his shadow instead.

Matias and Johan had run into each other on film recordings and poster shots, but then Johan only shot his characters. Now he wanted Matias, so they took a day and walked around Långholmen with the camera. This one became Johan’s favorite. As Johan says “Matias is tough on film but soft in reality”.

Malik was an incredibly kind, warm and nice person. He only got upset when he talked about the Film Institute and their lack of support for his film. There was a different sound from the Institue when the film actually won an Oscar for best documentary.
Success and happiness do not always go hand in hand. This was the last picture Johan took of Malik. It is taken through Malik’s corrected balcony window. The hand is Johan’s. He had to make a shadow to be able to see anything at all and set the focus. For Johan, looking at the picture, it feels like Malik is saying hello "I have peace here, on the other side, take care of you wherever you are."

The film at the moment was called "Rusty Cage" by Audiard. Johan got very short time in his hotel room and the first thing Johan saw was the patch on Jaque’s thumb. It must be included. Jaques ALWAYS wears a hat. It has to be included, but maybe not for that reason? And then the cage, around his bed.

Johan is never nervous before a photo shoot. But he has been. And most of all when photographing Ernst Hugo Järegård, known for being moody. Johan had not slept at all the night before and once he unpacked the camera he realized that he forgot to bring the right film… He only had small screen film and a medium format camera. In a MacGyver-like way he managed to get the roll in the camera. Therefore, the holes and the text are visible in the image. The downside was that he could not rewind the movie. He only had 17 snaps.

Anton was in Stockholm to promote the film "Control". He held a press conference, but Johan skipped it and booked his own time with Anton the next day. When the press conference was over, Anton’s assistant called Johan and canceled the photo shoot, referring to the fact that Swedish photographers are boring and lacking in ideas. Johan had an exhibition at the hotel where Anton stayed and asked the assistant to check out the pictures and get back. If he thought Johan’s pictures were boring, they would cancel. Johan got an appointment. At 2 pm in November in Stockholm. Pitch black.Johan had decided to shoot with film and without artificial light… Johan managed to get a caretaker to open an elevator shaft so they could get out on the roof. There would be daylight, he hoped. When Johan turned around and saw this two meter long Dutchman appear in the hole, he saw the picture and asked him to stay there.

A photograh of friends and colleagues Daniel and Josef. This was right after the movie Snabba Cash 1. They work as assistant directors for each other on their films. When Josef directs, Daniel assists and vice versa. Johan wanted to catch the fraternity and they immediately posed very manly with their arms around each other… .no, no, no Johan said. When my 7-year-old son shows up with his friend, they hold hands. It's real love and friendship. And for a few seconds they actually stood like this… before it felt too weird. They still talk about this shoot.

David's wife was ill with the flu. The idea was that the shoot would take place in their hotel room, but Johan managed to borrow Terry Gilliam's room (who lived in the same hotel and with whom Johan had some contact) so they could be there instead. Johan promised David to be ready in less than ten minutes, as long as David did what Johan asked. David really wanted to go back to his wife. According to Johan this is without a doubt the fastest, best and easiest photo shoot he has pulled off. David was like clay. And seven minutes later they said thank you and good bye.

Johan photographed Peter for an exhibition catalog and noted his constant sucking on a fake cigarette that should contain nicotine. He said it was empty. He had no problem quitting smoking, but having something in his mouth was hard to quit. The cigarette puts time in the picture. He looks like the 18th century, but that piece of plastic signals 1998!
